Neurosurgery
On our neurosurgical ward, you will assess and treat your own caseload of patients with speech, language and swallowing problems as a result of neurosurgery. This may include brain tumours and awake craniotomies, hydrocephalus and head injury. You will also work alongside Consultant Neurosurgeons who are experts in their field as well as the wider multidisciplinary team, and provide support to ICU and Neuro-Rehabilitation departments.
Neuro-rehabilitation
In our dedicated neuro-rehabilitation unit, you’ll have access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, including high tech AAC. Patients with complex neurological disability will be provided with a detailed assessment of their communication and swallowing impairments. You’ll work with the patient, their families, and the MDT to set rehabilitation goals, providing intensive, evidenced-based therapeutic programmes, and follow the patient through their rehabilitation journey.
Intensive Care Unit
In our ICU, you’ll provide assessment and therapy provision to patients with complex communication, swallowing and tracheostomy weaning needs as a result of multiple aetiologies and comorbidities, and due to the presence of equipment/technologies used to support life. You’ll carry your own caseload and work closely with Consultant Intensivists and multidisciplinary colleagues, using advanced clinical reasoning to optimise patient outcomes, and use of instrumental assessment such as FEES is likely to be commonplace.
